The Allure of the Multiverse: Extra Dimensions, Other Worlds, and Parallel Universes - Paul Halpern
Shared by:hdgdf
The long history of one of physics’ most enticing that the universe we know isn’t the only one
Our books, our movies—our imaginations—are obsessed with extra dimensions, alternate timelines, and the sense that all we see might not be all there is. In short, we can’t stop thinking about the multiverse. As it turns out, physicists are similarly captivated.
In The Allure of the Multiverse , physicist Paul Halpern tells the epic story of how science became besotted with the multiverse, and the controversies that ensued. The questions that brought scientists to this point are big and Is reality such that anything can happen, must happen? How does quantum mechanics “choose” the outcomes of its apparently random processes? And why is the universe habitable? Each question quickly leads to the multiverse. Drawing on centuries of disputation and deep vision, from luminaries like Nietzsche, Einstein, and the creators of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Halpern reveals the multiplicity of multiverses that scientists have imagined to make sense of our reality. Whether we live in one of many different possible universes, or simply the only one there is, might never be certain. But Halpern shows one thing for how stimulating it can be to try to find out.

All I would like to say is that no one in the world knows if there is a multiverse or a single universe or anything like that, it’s all speculative thoughts. But it’s not worth a penny, because there’s nothing in it, it’s all just noise. It would be better if the author tried to make some contribution to science or progress, but not to such crap.

Artur1…
did you lose your imagination?
maybe it’s under your bed, might want to take a look.
The beauty of human nature is the abilty to think, to dream, to imagine
i may not believe in the mutiverse, aliens, ghosts, etc.
However, i do enjoy putting my mind to work imagining what could be.
the book series Area 51 here on ABB is a great example,
If you want to be entertained, books, movies,
you have to accept certain impossibilities.
this sounds very entertaining,
certainly worth a few hours to let your mind roam in “other places”

Flat Earth, goblins, the multiverse, witches, trolls and other imaginary things belong somewhere else, not in the science section.

If I wanted to be entertained, I would listen to science fiction audiobooks. This science section is getting more and more trashy. All pseudo-scientific audiobooks are dumped in this section. If you want to stretch your imagination, check out the science fiction section!

Well, if I can add my 5 cents. After 20 years of studying Near Death Experiences, I think they are right on track. We definitely leave this universe and go somewhere. Apparently we can come back here wherever we like to learn and gain experience. I’ve heard this from tens of thousands of people who have died and were resuscitated. I have no doubt there are multiple dimensions.
Its really worth a look.

Artur1 Can you recommend some SF authors? Afraid I got stuck after Asimov.

Artur1,
if you come back to see replies…
remember,
ALL science is based on imagination.
gotta start somewhere… imagine going to the moon, imagine finding a cure for Covid
Nuff said..
Organic, Ben Bova is a great classic writer, The Area 51 series up here is also pretty good, i’m only on book 5 but it has kept my attention
Not exactly SCI FI but he has some, try Robert Silverberg, Great stuff…
