A thrilling history of the West’s scramble for the riches of ancient Egypt by the foremost Egyptologist of our time.
From the decipherment of hieroglyphics in 1822 to the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon a hundred years later, the uncovering of Egypt’s ancient past took place in an atmosphere of grand adventure and international rivalry.
In A World Beneath the Sands, acclaimed Egyptologist Toby Wilkinson chronicles the ruthless race between the British, French, Germans, and Americans to lay claim to its mysteries and treasures. He tells riveting stories of the men and women whose obsession with Egypt’s ancient civilization helped to enrich and transform our understanding of the Nile Valley and its people and left a lasting impression on Egypt, too. Travelers and treasure-hunters, ethnographers and archaeologists: whatever their motives, whatever their methods, a century of adventure and scholarship revealed a lost world, buried for centuries beneath the sands.

Thank you so much yoshq! An exciting book to read although it is painful to see how Egypt was drained from its artifacts and attractions by those guys. some of them wanted knowledge,some wanted adventure and some just wanted money and way to serve their countries colonisation.

>by those guys
You mean the Egyptians, right? Egyptians had been raiding tombs and selling priceless artifacts for pocket change for centuries before Europeans arrived.

@mybutthole
Even the worst of these Egyptians never used Dynamite on any historical Attraction. never any one of them went on removing a whole site from its own original place to be transformed to some faraway museum. none of these Egyptians said let make money out of these old ruins and don’t forget they were egyption afterall and even if not If those guys, they really cared for these priceless artifacts to study them and write about them to the world, they had the choice to live in egypt and do their beloved job by spreading awareness in Egypt itself and help its people in preserving them instead of enforcing a weak corrupt king to rule and through him drain the country from its heritage and resources. The Savants didn’t need a napoleon to go and study egypt.

Who provided the labor to dig up and carry off the monuments? The Egyptians.
“Many of the antiquities that remained in Egypt fared even worse. At Aswan, the pillared chapel was dismantled to build barracks and warehouses. Otehr monuments were demolished to feed lime kilns, while ancient mud brick made excellent fertilizer to support and increase in agricultural production. Mohamed Ali even encouraged his engineers to use the Giza pyramids as a convenient source of stone for the construction of new dams across the Nile.” (~2:50:00)
Who intentionally destroyed historical artifacts in Syria and Iraq? ISIS.
>The Savants didn’t need a napoleon to go and study egypt.
Who rediscovered how to read the language of the ancient Egyptians? Champollion.
Re Description de l’Égypte: “…in some cases [the images of monuments] are the only record of buildings which were subsequently damaged or destroyed.” (~1:44:00)
>don’t forget they were egyption afterall
What do two cultures separated by 5000 years have to do with one another besides living on the same land?

Also, who looted their own national museum? Iraquis.

The ones Who Had the money to build Archaeological institute and a museum in Egypt but instead they went on stealing spree useing the poor oppressed egyptians suffering and their need for some little money while they make instead millions of Francs out of taking something is not theirs and BTW not all of them needed any digging to steal. Sati the first sarcophagus was comepletaly taken from its own place and removed with no respect without any digging.
Mohamed Ali was power hangry opportunistic greedy Bi’ch who shouldn’t have ruled after 3 years before his rebellion against the ottomans so The british and French saw this and sponsored him to become their puppet over egypt so they can Drain egypt under his dictatorial government’s cover while weakening the ottoman state at the same time. If those treasure hunters really cared for Egypt they could have used their money for the good of Egypt heritage and its people by spreading awareness not by dismantling it and stealing it and taking it outside.
They didn’t care about the heritage they wanted to make money out of it.
ISIS was a foreign intelligence good piece of work.
Now tell me, How did they have their weapons? how did they control with minutes cities full of millions? How the Air forces of so many Powers couldn’t stop them? ok then, who benefited from their sudden expansion? so you think really who destroyed palmyra were Deash? they were Russian and Assadi thugs acting as Deash. these people killed millions you think they care about some ruines.
it was not champollion alone and the reason why the code was deciphered is becueas works of Ibn Wahshiyya. he was a medieval Muslim scholar who succeeded in discovering that ancient egyption is not picturistic language as it was assumed in all of europe.also by help of some Coptic priests.
and Yes all of them didn’t need a napoleon to make Re Description de l’Égypte. before them many visited egypt. it didn’t need a colonial invasion and BTW suddenly after Description de l’Égypte that all these attractions began to disappear… Just WOW what a coincidence.
>don’t forget they were egyption afterall
oh really! so France today is not Gulish and thus other nations must go to france and steal all clatic artifacts from france and sell them to all museums around the world out of france to make money out of them? correct? and What really the Franch,British,Germains,Italians have anything do with Egypt as culture or in deep history or in civilization? at least modern Egyptians still speak some of the ancient egyptians in their arabic accent and also arabic is related to the ancient egyption language in grammar and vocales.
the Iraqi museums were destroyed by The American,Iranian,Kuwaitis,Israeli Agents sponsored by USA,IRAN,UK,POLAND,KUMITE,KSA. in their invasion. there is a reason why The Ancient old bibles kept in the Iraqi museum is now in Israel. and there is another reason why all of Iraq gold is in the US to this day.

It’s always someone else’s fault, isn’t it? Somehow, you’re never responsible for your own problems.

Considering Ibn Wahshiyya died nearly 1,000 years before Champollion, the pace of progress made in the Orient since then is not impressive. Admit it: if not for Westerners we still wouldn’t be able to read hieroglyphics. Also, there’s no evidence whatsoever Champollion knew of Ibn Wahshiyya.

Let’s keep in mind that at this time the Ottoman Empire still occupied a large chunk of Europe, so if you want to complain about people being where they don’t belong I’m afraid you’re on the wrong side of that argument. Also, the Ottomans had invaded Europe less than two centuries earlier, so why shouldn’t the British and French want to weaken the Porte? Finally, why do you think European Egyptologists had any obligation to “use their money for the good of Egypt’s people”? Did Egyptians use their money for the good of Britain’s or France’s people? Absurd.

It is always was both but one has the power and money and one is not. Power and Money mean responsibility and those foragion powers never used them in such manner, in that region. if it was not for the british and French, Albannin Muhammad Ali wouldn’t have had ruled Egypt. Just as trump said once to the Saudis without us your regime would have fallen in metter of weeks, you gotta pay for our protection. he said it clearly! this is how Egypt became a puppet.
Ibn Wahshiyya Discovery was The great base of idea which without it, understanding the language construction would be always has been studied wrong. Most of scholars assumed it was picturistic language not an alphabetic one. Both Toumas Young and champollion read Ibn Wahshiyya before going on their studies. and Champollion stayed for a long time in the Coptic French church to learn coptic by egyption christians.
This is not about west vs East. I was talking about those treasure hunters thugs. they destroyed and dismantled many attractions. even some of these attractions have disappeared thanks to them. Giuseppe Ferlini used a dynamite on the Great pyramid N6 in Meroë. These guys never cared for history or for any enlightenment but for money and greed.and surelay by their sponsors. The brit and French Bourgeoisies.

@mybutthole
And west european nations were occupying the whole world! it is not about who occupied who but under the ottoman rule those attractions were not destroyed or dismantled for sake of some cash. also under the ottomans the people were citizens of the state and ruled in federal way. while under the western empires your land was simply a colony for the superior Race.
>why do you think European Egyptologists had any obligation to “use their money for the good of Egypt’s people”?
have you seen egyptians going to the UK to dig some Clatic,Roman sits while dismantling them and then come back with it to sale it in egypt? also they do have obligation to help if they truly care for humanities, it is something moral. if not then they better never go there in first place, no body need them they better dig in their own countries.
