In Does Capitalism Have a Future?, a global quintet of distinguished scholars cut their way through to the question of whether our capitalist system can survive in the medium run. Despite the current gloom, conventional wisdom still assumes that there is no real alternative to capitalism. The authors argue that this generalization is a mistaken outgrowth of the optimistic nineteenth-century claim that human history ascends through stages to an enlightened equilibrium of liberal capitalism. All major historical systems have broken down in the end, and in the modern epoch several cataclysmic events-notably the French revolution, World War I, and the collapse of the Soviet bloc-came to pass when contemporary political elites failed to calculate the consequences of the processes they presumed to govern. At present, none of our governing elites and very few intellectuals can fathom a systemic collapse in the coming decades. While the book’s contributors arrive at different conclusions, they are in constant dialogue with one another, and they construct a relatively seamless-if open-ended-whole.
Written by five of world’s most respected scholars of global historical trends, this ambitious book asks the most important of questions: Are we on the cusp of a radical world historical shift?

Here’s an idea, lets make everyone equally poor. Well, except the ones who govern, as they need to be more equal, to handle the stress and stuff.
No system is perfect, but Capitalism is the best one out there, as it encourages people to try their best to succeed. Risk/Reward. How often do you see a welfare slug going out of their way to get off it and be a contributing member of society?

Thanks yet again, anansisan!
Pay no heed to those who cannot envision a much better economic and political system than capitalism.
Capitalism is going to die. It must in a framework where continual growth only leads to degradation of planetary resources; and the attendant pollution that entails.
I have been espousing eco-anarchism for decades. People are so inured to their possessions that most cannot see a better way. Fine. Not everyone can self-govern, but for those that can, I can think of no more liberative force. For trade, I am an anarcho-syndicalist. The producers should control the means of production and distribute the wealth much more equitably than is currently being done.
I am sure that D. Brophy has given the book a fair chance..since there zero D/Ls completed as of posting time. I am ‘pre-five’ starring the book. Thanks again!!

Dave, instead of just being a knee-jerk reactionary who thinks they already know everything there is to know, why don’t you download and read the book? It’s free, after all. Like the description says, there are 5 authors contributing to the book and they all arrive at different conclusions. So who knows, it just might give you some food for thought, or even strengthen your existing ideas.

I’ll save you the time of bothering with this nonsense. Does Capitalism Have a Future? As the only system that works, that’s a resounding YES as has been proven time and time again throughout history.
There, I just saved you some time. You’re welcome.

Who would say… Dave Brophy, defending capitalism on the very first day of the year… in a p2p site! :-)
If I had any doubt capitalism as dead as punk, he just gave me the evidence…

Very interesting but too academic for mass consumption for those most needed to it. Than again… those most needed to read clearly want nothing of it.
