How free-market economies really work
(and why they work so well)
Are free market economies really based on fleecing the consumer? Is the U.S. economy truly just a giant free-for-all that encourages duplicity in our everyday transactions? Is everyone from corporate CEOs to your local car salesman really looking to make a buck at your expense?
In Freedomnomics: Why the Free Market Works and Other Half-Baked Theories Don’t,
economist and bestselling author John R. Lott, Jr., answers these and other common economic questions, bravely confronting the profound distrust of the market that the bestselling book Freakonomics has helped to popularize. Using clear and hard-hitting examples, Lott shows how free markets liberate the best, most creative, and most generous aspects of our society–while efforts to constrain economic liberty, no matter
how well-intentioned, invariably lead to increased poverty and injustice. Extending
its rigorous economic analysis even further to our political and criminal justice
systems, Freedomnomics reveals:
? How the free market creates incentives for people to behave honestly
? How political campaign restrictions keep incumbents in power
? Why legalized abortion leads to family breakdown, which creates more crime
? Why affirmative action in police departments leads to higher crime rates
? How women’s suffrage led to a massive increase in the size of government
ยท Why women become more conservative when they get married and more
liberal when they get divorced
? How secret ballots reduce voter participation
? Why state-owned companies and government agencies are much more likely to engage in unfair predation than are private firms
? Why the controversial assertions made in the trendy book Freakonomics are almost entirely wrong
Entertaining, persuasive, and based on dozens of economic studies spanning decades, Freedomnomics not only shows how free markets really work–but proves that, when it comes to promoting prosperity and economic justice, nothing works better.

This guy somehow goes from free markets to “Why legalized abortion leads to family breakdown” and “How secret ballots reduce voter participation”.
By “free markets” he actually means “let those with power and wealth can do whatever they like and everyone else should just keep their heads down and shut up”.
Not surprisingly, Lott is often on Fox News and is also a gun nut.
But I wonder how he reconciles “free markets” with Trump’s arbitrary tariffs.

There is very little economics here, with a focus on confirming his bias over rigorous methodology (see article above for details).

Any commentator who is still calling - a quarter way into the 21st century - for a rollback of women’s emancipation, must have a fiercely individual turn of mind:- and an endless supply of handcream.
Thanks for the posting rmoor; it wouldn’t be much of a circus without the clowns.

I guess you could argue the free market works 1) when you’re winning 2) you have no conscience.
Also didn’t the 2008 banking crisis prove that there are no free marketeers in foxholes :D

Free market allows for us to utilize slave labor in totalitarian nations WHILE AT THE SAME it allows for the destruction and consumption of our natural resources at record speeds never seen before in human history. How could anyone dislike it?
Do the earth a favor, have your humans spayed or neutered. Especially those who can’t even manage to support themselves.

The sad fact is both sides of our joke of a government will sacrifice anything they must on the alter of “THE ECONOMY”

jonwb, I don’t think any free market capitalist would disagree with your concerns. Conservative, Hugh Hewitt, for example, has been calling for legislation that would prohibit drug manufacturers from seizing control of medications to gain a monopoly and drastically raise the prices.
On the other hand, look at the implications of the awful repercussions of California and Illinois doubling minimum wage, to $15 an hour. Consider the economic problems this creates for retired people living on a fixed income as prices skyrocket and inflation drives people to despair. Illinois has already outsourced high paying jobs, and is borrowing money from China because they don’t know how to maintain a budget. The enormous tax burden already levied on residents is driving people out of state faster than they can handle, and the legislators are introducing more taxes to counterbalance the problem, while giving themselves a raise. Chicago has become synonymous with corruption, and it’s become oppressive.
