In the early medieval times a sword would cost a years worth of pay for a commoner. And that price wasn’t going to get you a double edged great sword.

Knights didn’t exist in the early middle ages, at least if we’re going off the fall of Rome as the start of the middle ages, so, based on the setting and tech levels implied in the book, a decent sword would have cost around two days wage, based on prices in London in the 14th century.
Personally, I feel that this series would be much better if the first book consisted entirely of the MC punching people whilst trying to locate a replacement sword.
