Dying isn’t any fun…but at least it’s a living.
Mickey7 is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous — even suicidal — the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.
On a fairly routine scouting mission, Mickey7 goes missing and is presumed dead. By the time he returns to the colony base, surprisingly helped back by native life, Mickey7’s fate has been sealed. There’s a new clone, Mickey8, reporting for Expendable duties. The idea of duplicate Expendables is universally loathed, and if caught, they will likely be thrown into the recycler for protein.
Mickey7 must keep his double a secret from the rest of the colony. Meanwhile, life on Niflheim is getting worse. The atmosphere is unsuitable for humans, food is in short supply, and terraforming is going poorly. The native species are growing curious about their new neighbors, and that curiosity has Commander Marshall very afraid. Ultimately, the survival of both lifeforms will come down to Mickey7.
That is, if he can just keep from dying for good.

ripoff of 2009’s Moon with Sam Rockwell ?

@asawa Thank you for sharing this book!
@trailerpark For some reason my first association was “Six Wakes” by Mur Lafferty (maybe not entirely accurate, but the same can be said about “The Martian” and “Dark Matter”: “The Martian meets Dark Matter in Edward Ashton’s high concept science fiction thriller”, Amazon). There’s also some similarities with the 2009 movie “Moon” with Sam Rockwell (mostly the idea of expendable human clones and not much else), and I certainly wouldn’t go as far as to suggest a ripoff.
This book is a true sci-fi gem, highly recommended.

Chapter 12
…we spent a lot of time talking. Nasha had stories. Her parents were immigrants, which, given the colossal expense and time required to get anywhere in the Union, is something that almost nobody other than beachhead colonists can say. They’d come to Midgard thirty years earlier on the ‘Lost Hope’, a refugee ship from New Hope, the world that had been, up until its inhabitants decided to kill one another, Midgard’s nearest neighbor.
You wouldn’t think a place like Midgard would be hard on immigrants. It’s not like we didn’t have the room or resources to take in a few hundred lost souls. You’d be wrong, though. Humans are tribal, and the refugees’ accents were enough to mark them as outsiders, even setting aside the fact that the majority of them had skin a few shades darker than most of Midgard’s original population. They hadn’t been on Midgard for a month before anonymous articles started popping up on the feeds arguing that they were carriers for whatever lunacy had engulfed New Hope, and that if they were allowed to insinuate themselves into our social and political life, they’d drag Midgard down that same path. The government set them up with basic stipends and places to live, but right from the jump it was almost impossible for them to find real jobs. Two years after they landed, a few dozen of them staged a sit-in that turned into a protest that turned into a minor riot. After that, they had a hard time even getting their kids admitted into the general schools.
It was right about then that Nasha was born…

Interesting, it’s always folks with “skin a few shades darker” who are victims, oppressed by bad white folks, and never the other way around (I cannot recall any such thing among the books I’ve been through recently, anyway). Just an observation.

Regrettably, this book did not quite live up to my high expectations (maybe I will expand on that later, no promises).
