In Parasites on Parade, Larken Rose (author of The Most Dangerous Superstition and The Iron Web) uses his own direct experiences with bureaucratic and judicial stupidity, intrusion, and corruption to illustrate why, everywhere and at all times, in every situation and at every level, government sucks! This snarky, flippant look at the mentality and tactics of various state busybodies also provides an important lesson regarding the true nature of political “authority,” and the problems and abuses it naturally creates.

“WASHINGTON — A Pennsylvania man, whom the Justice Department calls a “notorious tax protester,” was sentenced to 15 months in prison for failing to file five years of tax returns. Larken Rose of Hollywood, Pa., was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine, back taxes, penalties and interest.”

Ok then mate - you go ahead and organise the refuse collection. Start with that, and lets see how you get on before we give you something else to do.

tenbenson, trash collection has been performed by private companies in every state I’ve ever lived. Nice try though.

@tenbenson - Well said.
Ayn Rand received social security benefits in her dotage. Which is amusing enough, but my favorite statement from a libertarian came off Fox News: “I was on food stamps once, but I’m a self-made man, no one ever gave me anything!” Literally contradicting himself in the same sentence.
If taxation is theft then stop using our roads, our schools, our airports, our hospitals, our social support nets, our internet and our military.

@erouting
So I’m forced to pay into something I’m against, and if I complain I can’t collect. You have any proof didn’t Ayn Rand pay in.
March 4th, 2022
@ThoughtCriminal are you implying that those private companies weren’t paid with tax money? Not sure what you’re trying to imply here.

@ceb1980
“I’m not in school, so why should I pay taxes that go towards education?”
So you can live in a society where people have access to education.
“I don’t drive or travel, why should I pay taxes that go towards maintaining roads?”
So you can have the option of getting goods and services brought to your doorstep.
If taxes were abolished, it would come back to bite you in the arse far sooner than you realise. Try negotiating how much it costs for a private firefighter to show up before your house burns down.

As has been said before, libertarians are like house cats. “They are convinced of their fierce independence while utterly dependent on a system they don’t appreciate or understand.”

@ThoughtCriminal
There is actually one area where I agree with you. Libertarians tend to be socially rightwing, which is amusing as left-wing tax policies are much more often used to collect money for things you actually use.
In the UK (still, somehow, not as bad as the US, but trying hard) our governments attempt to privatise literally everything. Yet we still pay taxes. Only our tax money doesn’t pay for transport or education any more, it pays for a member of the Royal family to stump up some hush money so he doesn’t get convicted as a pederast. They also pay for our arms industry, virtually one of the only things we have left that makes money. So our taxes pay for the weapons used by the Saudis to drop on schools and hospitals.
That, my friend, is theft.

Income tax is merely a temporary little expedient. Just as soon as Napoleon is put back in his boîte, it’ll be sharply guillotined.

@Jack_Milad I pay them directly for their service. And if services are made available with money that is stolen from the citizens, they SHOULD be using it. If somebody steals your wallet and offers to buy you lunch, taking the food isn’t condoning the theft, it’s minimizing your losses.

@TenBenson, I don’t know about libertarians “tending” to be socially right wing. Maybe the annoying ones online. Not me or anyone in my circles. That’s contrary to the principles IMO.
It sounds like we agree on a lot more than we disagree on.
March 6th, 2022
@ThoughtCriminal
Yes and no. While I disagree about what my taxes are used for, I don’t disagree with paying them in the first place. If I choose to live in a society, then I have to contribute to that society. Otherwise I would have to live in a mountain hut and never speak to anyone.

It’s amazing how often the Aynn Rand social security factoid gets vomited up without any context as some kind of zinger.
Ayn Rand collected social security when of age because her publisher’s secretary AGAINST HER WILL had signed her up for it, why does the left’s asinine purity tests always insist people not use services they’ve paid for?
