The Nebula-nominated novel of “a brave new world of nearly constant future shock” - plus all the short fiction of the Shaper/Mechanist universe (The Washington Post).
Acclaimed science fiction luminary and a godfather of the genre’s remarkable offspring - cyberpunk - Bruce Sterling carries readers to a far-future universe where stunning achievements in human development have been tainted by a virulent outbreak of prejudice and hatred.
Many thousands of years in the future, the human race has split into two incompatible factions. The aristocratic Mechanists believe that humans can only achieve their greatest potential through technology and enhancing their bodies with powerful prosthetics. The rebel Shapers view these “improvements” as abominations, and their faith in genetic enhancements over mechanical ones has led to violent, even murderous, clashes between the two sects.
One man is caught in the middle. The child of Mechanists, Abelard Lindsay is a former Shaper diplomat who was betrayed and cast out of the fold. Scrupulously trained in the fine art of treachery and deceit, he travels freely between the warring camps during his never-ending exile, embracing piracy and revolution all along the way. But while saving his own skin is Lindsay’s main motivation, a greater destiny awaits him, one that could offer a bold new hope for a tragically sundered humankind.

Amazing collection of SF ideas including genetics, cyborgs, politics, religion, posthumanity, and so much more.Abelard Lindsay makes his way through 200 years of history, so there are some time jumps. My favorite book from the SF Holy Trinity of Gibson, Sterling, and Banks.
Main novel plus 6 short stories. Well worth the size.

svartmann you emotional child, get over yourself.
This is really great sci-fi, recommended for anyone that’s even remotely interested in the future of mankind.

Abelard is a masculine given name of Germanic origin. Abélard, a contraction of Adalhard, the meaning of which connotes to ‘inner strength’ and ‘nobility of spirit’.
The surname Lindsay (or Lindsey) is of old Anglo-Saxon origin, and ultimately a Scottish name. It derives from the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Lindsay in the region between Scotland and Northumbria, and from the Scottish Lord Walter de Lindsay. Lindsay (or Lindsey) was initially a surname, but it was increasingly used as a masculine given from the 1800’s onward in both the U.K. and the U.S.A. It started to become unisex only around the 1960’s and 70’s when women also began taking it as a given name.
So, yes, Sterling’s character Abelard Lindsay most definitely has a masculine given name.
As for the book - excellent future shock narrative and one of the benchmarks for the genre (a post-cyberpunk narrative right at the beginning of the cyberpunk movement). You can see some of its influence on Alastair Reynolds and his Revelation Space sequence of novels and short stories.
