What is socialism? Does it have a future, or has it become an outdated ideology in the 21st century?
This Very Short Introduction audiobook considers the major theories in socialism and explores its historical evolution from the French Revolution to the present day. Michael Newman argues that socialism has always been a diverse doctrine, while nevertheless containing a central core of interconnected values and goals: a critique of capitalism; an optimistic view of human beings; and the belief that it is possible to establish societies based on egalitarianism, social solidarity, and cooperation. In this new edition, he draws on case studies such as Cuba, Sweden, and Bolivia to consider attempts to implement socialism in practice, before discussing New Left challenges to conventional notions of socialism on such questions as feminism, climate change, and direct action. Rejecting the widespread view that socialism is an outdated doctrine, Newman argues that it remains ultimately relevant in today’s world.

Socialism is a wonderful idea. It is only as a reality that it has been disastrous. Among people of every race, color, and creed, all around the world, socialism has led to hunger in countries that used to have surplus food to export… Nevertheless, for many of those who deal primarily in ideas, socialism remains an attractive idea — in fact, seductive. Its every failure is explained away as due to the inadequacies of particular leaders.

In essence, communism(*) is a desire never to grow up and to have Christmas all year round.
Marxists dream of a carefree world ruled by Santa, with exciting gifts for all obedient boys and girls.
Tell them it’s not a viable scenario, and they’ll put you on a long list of bad boys and girls who must be imprisoned before the wonderful dream of living on Santa’s lap can finally be achieved.

I grew up behind the Iron Curtain i was properly introduced to socialism. It is axactly what Churchill said it is.
“Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy.”

Americans, please… try not to have the same argument on here.
Socialism works some of the time. As an Australian, I’m glad for the universal health care system we have.

I reckon it does work perfectly well - everywhere - it’s, uh, only that its every failure is due to the inadequacies of particular leaders. We should definitely go with that.

Americans do not, have never and will never understand what socialism is.
Because each and every one of them read “socialism” and understand “communism” - something else they don’t fully understand.

This quote reminds me the infamous Obama’s “You did not build that…”:
“There is nobody in this country who got rich on their own. Nobody. You built a factory out there - good for you. But I want to be clear. You moved your goods to market on roads the rest of us paid for. You hired workers the rest of us paid to educate. You were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn’t have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory… Now look. You built a factory and it turned into something terrific or a great idea - God bless! Keep a hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along.” —Elizabeth Warren

Thanks for sharing. And yes, my fellow Americans are terrified of the s-word, mainly because they have no idea what it means, hence these vacuous outbursts in every even-socialism-adjacent book’s comment section. Honestly, I can read “socialism” in the right-wing Thomas Sowell’s quote above replaced by “capitalism” and it feels more truthful; look at the sorry state of American healthcare, homelessness, child poverty.
Context of Obama quote: “If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges.” If you’re going to remain wounded about nine-year-old uncontroversial statements, pls give them even a little context when quoting. I remember this being hauled out by the Romney campaign; surely we can all agree Mitt has received a few helping hands in his day.

“Sorry state” of anything is relative — taking into consideration how many people want to immigrate and live in evil capitalist America, and how few want to move in the opposite direction, one can logically assume that in comparison things in America are a lot better.
There are only two reasons why some people may want to replace capitalism with socialism: (i) they lack competitiveness, so they don’t mind giving up their freedoms in exchange for being cared from cradle to grave by the state, and (ii) they lust for power, so they hope to find a place in the new power structure for themselves, way above the ordinary population.
“The only true measure of human decency is the love of freedom and the hatred of tyranny”.
Measured against this scale, probably the only scale that matters, the authors of fairy-tale books about socialism can hardly qualify as decent human beings.

Beautiful. An exploration of the major historical theories of socialism. Worth reading, lest you make a fool of yourself by publically arguing that Nazis were socialists.
