Critic Reviews
“Exhibiting an enviable depth of knowledge across a wide range of texts and topics – and with more than a dollop of humor spread throughout – Bowen has written a useful and much-needed overview to some of the most significant topics in the study of the Hebrew Bible. You don’t bring a knife to a gunfight, and you shouldn’t go into a debate about the Bible without your copy of this book handy.” (Dr. Joel Baden, Professor of Hebrew Bible, Yale Divinity School)
“This is more than a book about the Hebrew Bible. And it’s more than a book for atheists. It’s a masterclass in how to read and understand the Hebrew Bible on its own terms - and not those imposed by modern-day believers. An Atheist’s Handbook to the Old Testament digs down deep into those biblical texts so often used by fundamentalist Christians to render the Hebrew Bible a prophetic guidebook to their God - and turns their own arguments on their head. This book is essential reading for anyone who’d like the tools to excavate the Hebrew Bible for themselves with precision, skill and intellectual integrity.” (Dr. Francesca Stavrakopoulou, Professor of Hebrew Bible and Ancient Religion, University of Exeter)
“Bowen’s book reminds us that the Hebrew Bible is not precise, and the evidence is overwhelming that it wasn’t written by Moses. This assembled compilation of works from unknown authors, editors and redactors promotes barbaric cruelty, and it contains failed prophecies and irreconcilable contradictions, such that a literal interpretation of all of it is untenable.” (Aron Ra, Host of the Ra-Men Podcast, Board of Directors for American Atheists)

Well, no one here believes in honoring the eighth commandment anyway…
September 4th, 2021
I know you tried a joke there, but let us go deep:
“Steal” in this commandment has traditionally been interpreted by Jewish commentaries to refer to the stealing of an actual human being, that is, to kidnapping

Thank you for this!

:D an armload of anachronistic misinformation - the usual pablum for atheists who can’t face the truth - all they really have is a regurgitation of the follies of 19th century “higher criticism”.
September 4th, 2021
don’t waste time learning the bible unless you plan to fleece the flock like a televangelist.

I was born Catholic, yep, go ahead and piss on me

@chrisxiii - You wouldn’t dare to read it. Could make you think yourself.

“the usual pablum for athiests who can’t face the truth”…interesting.
So, the truth is your god, who hasn’t even existed as long as a bunch of others, is the One! True! God! huh?
The truth is, for someone who should be buying into the whole “judge not, lest ye be judged” thing, you’re a bit of an epic fail, aren’t you? You’re judging HARD there, Chris 13.
The truth is, everything laid out in the bible is it, the guide to living a good life? How you making out with the not cutting your sideburns, and not wearing clothing of mixed fibers, and not sitting in a seat that a menstruating woman has sat? How’s that working out for you, you truth-facer?
I think the truth is, if God or Jesus showed up today, they’d be ripped up on social media. Fox news would say it’s a conspiracy. And anyone that decided that maybe they were real would be vilified by all the so-called “true christians”.
I think the truth is, you can’t even face your own truths.
Just my two cents.

This kind of material usually embodies the knockabout American “discourse” around religion - essentially, Americans shouting at each other over their respective misinterpretations of a book they haven’t read & do not understand. Both “sides” are fundamentalists. For inst, where above Aron Ra asserts that, concerning the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh), “the evidence is overwhelming that it wasn’t written by Moses.” Who has ever suggested that the entire Hebrew Bible was authored by Moses? There’s straw all over that one.
Further, “that a literal interpretation of all of it is untenable.” St Augustine, when considering the different modes of Biblical interpretation, observed that a literal interpretation of Genesis is the worst possible approach. The guy said that 1600 years ago.
These efforts always offer programmatic responses to memorise & parrot when faced with “hot-button issues” - such that when the subject is confronted by someone with real erudition, they can only fall back on incontinent emotion. That’s what we chortlingly refer to as “the discourse” baby.

If your thing is arguing with other people about their religion, it may be time to find a more fun thing. I suggest cooking. Or BDSM. Both are more productive hobbies.
September 4th, 2021
You could take a right whipping were you to opt for BDSM. It all depends on a bondage of trust, but remember to choose an immediately memorable safeword. Nothing too tangled or tortuous.

Kansas91…..You can’t help where you were born. It’s what you do after that counts.
Atheism is real.
September 5th, 2021
I suggest the category of spiritual and religious should be superstition. It would be a nice change if the human race tried to use facts instead of belief systems produced by lunatics in their arguments. Just saying.
September 5th, 2021
The ideological/genocidal maniacs of the 20th c had precisely the same opinion, illodiini. They haven’t gone away, y’know.
September 5th, 2021
Doesn’t mean religions contain a shred of truth. I’d rather get crushed by facts than fairy tales. Not that I’m in any hurry, mind.
September 5th, 2021
Yet, base materialism is wholly inadequate as an explanatory model. Materialism cannot give you ethics on any ground. As someone who is “deep in history” it’s also useful to reflect on all the goods contributed by religion, although many only wish to wallow in the flaws of human nature. However, if someone uses historical events as a strategy of attack, logically, it’s necessary to admit the positives.
And you’ve been crushed on numerous occasions.
September 5th, 2021
Still, (any) religion=poppycock. And it is also possible that we could be thousand times more advanced in every way without.
September 5th, 2021
Has any successful civilisation ever been established on those grounds? Look at the last century to discover the “advanced” barbarism of “without” - you actually have the empirical, object lessons before you. Merely observe what happened with your great, unfortunate neighbour. The progressive advances of planned famines, state slavery, genocide & the destruction of established ethical norms. The arguments make themselves.
September 5th, 2021
Well, I think you’re trying to replace one cult with another. And superstition is superstition even if you sprinkle real history and dates on it. For all the dubious good any one religion has brought it is still a lie i.e. fairy tale. Science, the real one, is always open to new information, and is willing to change, sometimes radically, its course. Religions are the exact opposites.
September 5th, 2021
Science is great. Scientism? Not so much. Religion, philosophy, existential/metaphysical speculation, principled ethical systems - these are all lying superstitions? It’s that simple? Or are they the foundation of civilisation, thought & moral reflection? Can’t anti-theist frameworks of rejectionism also be dismissed as cultic, with their own mythologies, high priests & heresies? More contrivances & wisful thinking, according to their own lights.
September 5th, 2021
I’m all for philosophy and meditation. And while I seriously doubt it, some sect of some religion may have produced something good for all. But it doesn’t bode well if any of it needs an all powerful being who is always right, even he/she/it isn’t. If religion is based on lie, and they all are, I don’t want anything do with it.
September 5th, 2021
Based on love & compassion kind of seals it for me. Rather than brute power, and all that garbage. Do you really doubt that religion is responsible for some good? Surely you know this to be utterly false?
Do you not regard the concept & doctrine of human rights to be good? The university, the hospital, charity, the preservation of literacy, learning, Classical texts & culture, the greatest art & architecture, philosophy, literature; the abolition of human sacrifice, the exposure (murder) of disabled children, brutal murder as mass entertainment spectacle (gladiatorial games); effectively countering the notion that the disabled were to be abandoned & shunned?
Surely, you would be able to compose a list just as long? As I said, if a person uses historical negatives as a strategy of attack, they must also admit the positives - and vice versa.
You recently mentioned that you had watched a documentary on the Great Famine. For all those who worship the State and revile religion - at that time the British state oversaw the continued export of food from a famine-stricken country - under armed guard; and the only effective relief efforts came from the religious.
September 5th, 2021
Um, you think love and compassion was invented by some religion? I don’t have the stamina to continue this debate, and I’m not that fond of whataboutism.
If a religion of your choice makes you happy, I’m happy too. Cheers!
September 5th, 2021
That it embodies love & compassion; and that what preceded it was an utterly impoverished, materialistic view of personhood (evidenced by history & the history of ideas). That it had to oppose human sacrifice and murder & torture as entertainment clearly expresses this fact about human development. The before & after.
This isn’t a debate, it’s a frank exchange of views!
Btw, that’s an incorrect use of “whataboutism” - because you had doubted any religious goods, and I merely provided a few examples.
September 5th, 2021
I meant me, not you. But yes, we’re not likely changing our personal views in a foreseeable future. Hm, so why it’s called exchanging of views?
I’m sure you know by now that I’m one of the good guys (despite being called a Viking by some religious fanatics), and I did that without mother or father churches or any kind of established religion. And I do come from a long line of atheists and most of them didn’t go to prison very often. So there.
September 5th, 2021
That’s all well & good, & I’m appalled that someone would call you a Viking (although the recent book, “Viking Heart: How Scandinavians Conquered the World” by Arthur Herman includes the Finns in ref to the Vikings. You’ll have to sue the publisher).
Exchanging views is good, ’cause then you can find out how demented people are - I mean find out what people think.
I think it’s a question of culture - the prevailing context. In the West, we grow up with a culture, legal, ethical & educational system which has been influenced or shaped by Judeo-Christian civilisation, principles & values. It inevitably has a bearing on our perception of objective morality, justice, and how we see the world. How we should treat one another. Even when we’re not actively engaged with formal religion. It’s declining now, however (but only in parts of the West).
I have no doubt that, if you & I had lived during the Classical era, we would enjoy regularly attending the slaughter & torture in the arena; as well as approving of human sacrifice, infanticide, and laughing at the blind & disabled being consumed by lions (this was sometimes the mid-show “entertainment” at the gladiatorial games). This was the prevailing context in which they lived. What I meant by before & after.
With blessed hindsight, I know which one I prefer. But then I might be one of those religious fanatics.
September 5th, 2021
Thank you for this. God loves, lives within, and works through atheists too. After all, there is no point at which God ends and that we begin. Let that sink in a bit.
September 5th, 2021
Also, in a study that I read, they found that 100% of atheists who had had near-death experiences (or even death experiences, but came back), were no long atheists. They basically said they were wrong. Many even became Christian ministers. One of the most well-known is Howard Storm. I would encourage you to watch some of his YouTube videos.
September 6th, 2021
Oh, my, the incredible and endless arrogance and message of superiority from a christian who’s so sure of his place in afterlife bliss.
Especially Christianity tried to stop any and all scientific progress for centuries, and the poor needed to know their place, as well as women and other than white race. And to be exact, the love & compassion thingy was of course meant only for the socially equals. Go f*ck yourself, my good learnaloud.
September 6th, 2021
That’s not fair, illodiini. What was the status of the poor, disabled & marginalized prior to Christianity & the advent of organised charity? Why did society begin to think that the poor should even be valued at all? It had never been the case before.
Christianity created the university - where do you think learning & scientific progress took place? Take a look at all the great Christian philosophers & scientists. Copernicus was a priest, for God’s sake. Ideology falls when confronted by fact.
September 6th, 2021
What about….aaargh! End of discussion.
September 6th, 2021
What about supporting assertions with those “fact” things that people talk about? Aaargh! (and so forth.) Emotion is the worst guide - we all know that, but we still fall for it.
