Valley of the Dolls is the debut novel by American author Jacqueline Susann, originally published on 1 February 1966.

Widely considered one of the bestselling novels of all time with more than 40 million copies sold worldwide, it chronicles the hypnotic rise and devastating pill-fueled downfalls of three young women clawing their way through the postwar entertainment industries of New York City and Hollywood.

The novel’s provocative title uses “dolls” as a slang term for prescription downers and sleeping pills, specifically barbiturates.
