A mesmerizing trip to the strange world of white holes from the bestselling author of Seven Brief Lessons on Physics and The Order of Time
Let us journey, with beloved physicist Carlo Rovelli, into the heart of a black hole. We slip beyond its horizon and tumble down this crack in the universe. As we plunge, we see geometry fold. Time and space pull and stretch. And finally, at the black hole’s core, space and time dissolve, and a white hole is born.
Rovelli has dedicated his career to uniting the time-warping ideas of general relativity and the perplexing uncertainties of quantum mechanics. In White Holes , he reveals the mind of a scientist at work. He traces the ongoing adventure of his own cutting-edge research, investigating whether all black holes could eventually turn into white holes, equally compact objects in which the arrow of time is reversed.
Rovelli writes just as compellingly about the work of a scientist as he does the marvels of the universe. He shares the fear, uncertainty, and frequent disappointment of exploring hypotheses and unknown worlds, and the delight of chasing new ideas to unexpected conclusions. Guiding us beyond the horizon, he invites us to experience the fever and the disquiet of science—and the strange and startling life of a white hole.

Rovelli was essential reading in The Order of Time, and I’m beginning to think his Anaximander might be as epochal as Bach Godel Escher.
I am - just about - old enough to remember when most of the astrophysicists I knew didn’t really believe in Black Holes (they weren’t even called Black Holes back then). I think Carlo Rovelli is just the theorist to introduce me to their even weirder cousins.

Trust the woke mob to make sure that there are white holes and black holes so that there is so called equality for the races.

Many thanks!

Theoretical physics is not really science because it is not falsifiable. Imagining yourself traveling through black holes to see what’s on the other side resembles more the telling of fairy tales.

Bah humbug. Good one Mojo. Thanks mate 👍

Thank you very much

For anyone who imagines that General Relativity is non-falsifiable I can thoroughly recommend Daniel Kennefick’s No Shadow of a Doubt (about the Eddington Experiment).
I might also remind such a person about the entrance requirements to enroll in The Academy.

Oy, prydeful, you’re trying too hard. Tone it down a shade.

In general, on a related matter, we operate with many unprovable assumptions in these areas. In the Special Theory of Relativity, for inst, the basis of the theory is the assumption that the speed of light is constant in a one-way direction between any 2 points, A & B; but that strictly cannot be proven, we assume it to hold to the theory.
Many such beliefs, including the laws of logic themselves, cannot be proven, yet they are accepted by us all, and we are entirely correct in so doing.
Indeed, academe needs to be more rigorous in its admissions.

If white holes dissolve time, then they can’t be seen as recent and cutting edge, so this is a pass from me. I’d like newer ideas.

If anyone ends up with the supplemental .pdf, please let me know on the forum. (I have the epub…)
