Americans, of all ethnic groups, should read this book. Coates provides a convincing perspective. The epilogue is a must read.

This is a very well written book. The period before the civil was politically co-opted by rich white, southern slave holders. They ruled the Senate and the House and cleaned up with hate and corruption in the executive. They brought you the Mexican American War, Bleeding Kansas and the U.S. Civil War. These are well reasoned facts that have been studied and written on by historians and writers from all sides of the political spectrum. History is not a liberal conspiracy.
