After 1989, capitalism has successfully presented itself as the only realistic political-economic system - a situation that the bank crisis of 2008, far from ending, actually compounded. The book analyses the development and principal features of this capitalist realism as a lived ideological framework. Using examples from politics, films, fiction, work and education, it argues that capitalist realism colours all areas of contemporary experience. But it will also show that, because of a number of inconsistencies and glitches internal to the capitalist reality program capitalism in fact is anything but realistic.

USA economic policy is a hybrid of capitalist and fascist economics. Roughly 31% of US GDP is a direct result of the government. Plus the Government subsidized the farming, communications defense, medical, public safety and energy sectors.
The bailout weren’t capitalism at work, under capitalism the markets would decide. That was fascist economics are work. So in short yes there another option and the whole developed world uses. That why we have few recessions today.
The only true capitalist nation in the world are in the developing world. That’s why they are notoriously unstable, capitalism

Just for nuanced completists: they also share their hairy hoor of an economy with Mordor, Beyond The Wall, Dracula’s Castle, the Overlook Hotel, the mind of Josef Stalin, The First Circle of Hell, and hemlock.

“The Only Thing, Historically, That’s Curbed Inequality: Catastrophe
Plagues, revolutions, massive wars, collapsed states—these are what reliably reduce economic disparities.”

Excellent, thank you.

Apnea, I would argue the assertion that catastrophe curbs inequality. The poor suffer the most during catastrophic times, while the rich are far more insulated.
The only thing that catastrophe does is eliminate the number of poor people at a higher rate than the rich. Not exactly leveling the playing field, just eliminating the pawns.

Revolution by Russell Brand is quite good as well.
Would you mind uploading The New Human Revolution by Daisaku Ikeda? <3
Thank you for all your hard work!

This book is incredible and really well read by Brand.
It’s so densely packed with the most uncannily accurate descriptions of modern life.
I also think that the fact that ‘resistance’ to capitalist realism takes the form of writing a book, giving some lectures, having some online comments on a torrent shows exactly how strong the dominant class are and how weak we are - we have no actual way to resist and enforce our will to power upon the world - all we can do is have a think and a chat and feel depressed until we kill ourselves like Mark did.
I think the way out is to stop these behaviours and reclaim action. Of course I ‘think’ it lol, but I really am going to do it. Good luck out there guys :)
If you like this, you’ll love David Graeber’s ‘Debt the last 5000 years’ which he also read in an abridged version for BBC Radio 4.
