In January 2002 Rory Stewart walked across Afghanistan-surviving by his wits, his knowledge of Persian dialects and Muslim customs, and the kindness of strangers. By day he passed through mountains covered in nine feet of snow, hamlets burned and emptied by the Taliban, and communities thriving amid the remains of medieval civilizations. By night he slept on villagers’ floors, shared their meals, and listened to their stories of the recent and ancient past. Along the way Stewart met heroes and rogues, tribal elders and teenage soldiers, Taliban commanders and foreign-aid workers. He was also adopted by an unexpected companion-a retired fighting mastiff he named Babur in honor of Afghanistan’s first Mughal emperor, in whose footsteps the pair was following.
Through these encounters-by turns touching, con-founding, surprising, and funny-Stewart makes tangible the forces of tradition, ideology, and allegiance that shape life in the map’s countless places in between.

I enjoyed this book. Unfortunately, it came out later that a lot was fiction made up by the author.
The author is UK secret service somehow too. Always lands on his feet.

Here’s an article about Mr. Stewart:

Was Rory Stewart, with his extensive diplomatic and volunteer service abroad a spy, an operative of M16 the British foreign intelligence services?
I wouldn’t be surprised, and if he was, then good luck to him, Britain needs sharp, inquisitive and analytical minds like Rory’s and we all know the secret services only recruits the very finest from among thousands of applicants.
What a pity the British never chose Rory Stewart to be their prime minister when they had the chance and royally blew it by choosing the buffoon Boris Johnston.
Maybe next time.
Back to the book…
What a mighty journey!
Traveling through the turmoil of the Afghanistan, on foot, during the lull between the rout of Al Qaeda, the overthrow of the Taliban, and the resurgence of fundamentalist resistance. On his own, on foot, unarmed. A cracking yarn!
All in all a great book and highly recommended for those who enjoy an insight into far-off foreign cultures, customs and history.
PS: Check out Tory Rory Stewart”s “The Rest is Politics” podcast, with ex-Labour spinmaster Alistair Campbell, a classic example of how two insiders, from opposite ends of the political spectrum, can agree, agree to disagree and discuss matters intelligently.
