“The Happiness Trap” by Russ Harris
Based on ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy)
Very practical, less theory-heavy than CBT
~6 hours, super applicable
Focus: accepting difficult feelings vs. fighting them
Core idea: Chasing happiness makes you miserable. Your mind evolved to focus on threats/negativity, so trying to think positively all the time is fighting biology.
The ACT approach in 6 points:
Defusion - Thoughts are just words, not truth (notice “I’m having the thought that I’m worthless” vs believing “I’m worthless”)
Acceptance - Stop fighting uncomfortable feelings, make room for them
Present moment - Be here now instead of lost in thoughts
Observer self - You’re not your thoughts/feelings, you’re the one noticing them
Values - What matters to you? (not goals, but directions)
Committed action - Do what matters even when it’s hard/scary
Bottom line: Stop trying to feel good. Start doing what matters. Feelings will follow (or not, and that’s okay too).
Takes the pressure off “fixing” yourself and puts it on living meaningfully despite discomfort.
